A kitty dilemma

In my youth, I was asked to house watch for a family.  My house duties technically also included cat sitting.  I say “technically” because I merely fed their black cat in the morning, let it outside for the day, and let it back inside in the evening for another feeding.  Simple stuff.

The evening before the family was to return, I did my usual routine except for one slight twist.  When I looked through the glass of the front door this time, there were two black cats, sitting on the porch!

I was never a cat person (strictly a dog guy), and so I hadn’t paid any attention to the details of “my” cat’s appearance.  Did it have special markings?  A collar of a particular color?  Any identifiable voice or behavior?  I had nothing.  As far as I was concerned, those two black cats were twins.

What to do?  I decided to just open the front door, and let the better cat win.   By offering entry on a first come, first serve basis, I hoped that the right cat would come in.

One cat did ultimately enter.  It seemed to be relatively comfortable in its surroundings.  I hoped it was the correct cat.

Still, I wasn’t completely sure.  When the family returned home the next day, they never said anything to me.  And I never asked.  They paid me for my service, and that was good enough confirmation for me.
