I owned a dog named Molly, who was a hound mix. Molly was not the most energetic dog in the world, and I thought she could use a little exercise. And so, to speed up her metabolism a bit, I took her jogging with me at the local high school running track.
I started running the big quarter mile oval, and she managed to keep up with me. At least initially. After the first lap, I noticed that she was starting to cut corners and was running her own, shorter inner track on the grass. With each lap, her concentric ovals got smaller and smaller.
Eventually, I noticed she was no longer running alongside me. I looked across the track and saw her lying in the grass at the center of the oval. She decided that she could still have a perfectly good view of me running the track, with no need to expend further energy. Molly may have been a bit lethargic, but she wasn’t stupid. She seemed to have an excellent grasp of geometry.
